Guide: how to use this driveway cost estimator

What it does

This estimator puts the asphalt vs. concrete vs. gravel vs. paver decision in one place. Enter your driveway's area and a few site options, and it shows the installed cost range for all four materials side by side, sorted cheapest to priciest, so you can see the genuine ~3× spread between materials. It also computes gravel tonnage, an effective $/sq ft for each option, and — if you enter a contractor quote — a plain-language verdict on whether that quote is reasonable. Output is always a low–high range, never a single firm price, because driveway costs genuinely vary. Everything is calculated privately in your browser, free.

How to use it

  1. Enter the driveway's length and width in feet, or type a total area directly (area overrides L × W).
  2. Pick the concrete thickness (4 in for cars, 6 in for RVs) and a gravel depth (4–6 in is the driveway range).
  3. Set whether you're removing an old driveway and the site prep / grading level — these apply equally to every material.
  4. Nudge the region adjustment if you're in a high- or low-cost metro (−20% to +40%).
  5. Optionally enter a contractor quote and its material to get a reasonableness verdict.

Worked example

An 800 sq ft driveway (40 ft × 20 ft), 4-in concrete, gravel 5 in, no removal, standard prep, region 0%:

  1. Area = 40 × 20 = 800 sq ft.
  2. Concrete (4 in) base = 800 × ($8–$15) = $6,400–$12,000.
  3. Standard prep = 800 × $1.00 = $800 (added to both ends). Removal = $0.
  4. Final concrete = ($6,400 + $800) to ($12,000 + $800), × 1.00 region = $7,200–$12,800.
  5. Same area: gravel ≈ $1,600–$3,200; asphalt ≈ $6,400–$10,400; pavers ≈ $8,800–$20,800.
  6. Gravel is the cheapest; pavers the priciest — a spread of roughly $17,000 for this driveway.

Gravel tonnage at 5 in ≈ 800 × (5/12) × 105 / 2000 ≈ 17.5 tons. A $9,000 concrete quote here lands within the expected range — reasonable.

How much does removing an old driveway cost?

About $1–$3/sq ft for asphalt and $2–$7/sq ft for concrete (concrete is far pricier to demolish). The tool applies removal equally to all four totals so the comparison stays fair. It's user-declared — match it to your actual surface and a contractor's number.

How much gravel do I need?

tons = area × (depth in ÷ 12) × 105 lb/cu ft ÷ 2000. Cross-check: ~2.5 tons per 100 sq ft at 6 in. An 800 sq ft drive at 5 in is roughly 17.5 tons of compacted crushed stone.

Is a $9,000 quote reasonable?

Enter the quote and its material; the tool tells you whether it's below, within, slightly above (within 15% of the high end), or well above the estimated range. A bid within a wide range is normal, not overcharging. If it's well above, get a second bid.

Does 6-inch concrete cost more than 4-inch?

Yes — modeled as ~+$2.00/sq ft (about 15–25% of the job). Six inches adds ~50% more volume and is needed for RVs and heavy vehicles. Use 4 in for standard cars.
