What it does

This estimator turns the four things that actually drive fence cost — linear footage, material, height, and gates — into an instant per-linear-foot figure and a low–high total range. Use it to sanity-check a contractor's bid before you commit. It is a planning estimate, not a quote, and everything is calculated privately in your browser, free and with no signup.

How to use it

1. Measure the perimeter being enclosed and enter it as linear feet (add up every side, not just one).
2. Pick your material, height, and terrain.
3. Add any walk gates, driveway gates, a permit fee, and toggle old-fence removal.
4. Read the estimated total, the all-in per-foot figure, and the bid-fairness verdict.

Worked example

A homeowner wants 150 ft of 6 ft cedar on flat ground, with 1 walk gate and no driveway gate, removal, or permit:

• Cedar base rate: $25–$55/ft at 6 ft, flat. Height ×1.00, terrain ×1.00 → adjusted rate stays $25–$55/ft.
• Fence subtotal: $25 × 150 = $3,750 low; $55 × 150 = $8,250 high.
• Walk gate: 1 × $400 = $400.
• Total: $4,150 – $8,650. Midpoint ≈ $6,400, or about $43/ft all-in.

So a cedar bid of roughly $4,000–$9,000 for this job is in the normal range; a $12,000 bid is worth questioning, and a $2,500 bid may be cutting corners on labor or materials.

How the number is built

Base installed rates are 2026 U.S. national low–high ranges (material + labor): chain link $12–$40, pressure-treated pine $18–$38, cedar $25–$55, vinyl $30–$60, aluminum $30–$50, composite $40–$70 per foot at a 6 ft height on flat ground. We scale that rate by a height multiplier (4 ft = 0.75, 6 ft = 1.00, 8 ft = 1.30) and a terrain multiplier (flat = 1.00, some slope = 1.10, steep/rocky = 1.25), multiply by your linear feet, then add flat adders for gates ($400/walk gate, $1,000/drive gate), old-fence removal (~$5/ft), and your permit fee.

Accuracy & disclaimers

• This is a planning estimate / sanity-check range, not a quote. Real bids depend on local labor rates, material availability, site access, post depth/frost line, and contractor overhead.
• Base rates are 2026 U.S. national ranges. High-cost metros (CA, NY, the Northeast) commonly run 20–40% above the high end; low-cost rural areas can fall below the low end. The tool does not localize by ZIP.
• Rates are installed (material + labor). DIY material-only costs are roughly 40–60% of these figures but exclude your time and tool/equipment rental.
• Gate figures are flat material-agnostic midpoints. A custom or automated/electric driveway gate can run $3,000–$8,000+ and is out of scope here.
• Height and terrain multipliers are industry rules-of-thumb, not precise engineering factors — they approximate the cost trend.
• The all-in per foot blends gates, removal, and permit across the run, so it reads higher than a bare material per-foot rate. That is intentional and matches how contractors quote whole jobs.
