Lawn Care Pricing Calculator — guide & how to use

What it does

This calculator turns a lawn's mowable area, mowing frequency, terrain, and add-ons into a clean per-visit price range and an estimated monthly cost — so you quote mowing jobs consistently and profitably. It prices off the grass you actually cut, applies the documented frequency and terrain premiums, separates edging/trimming/cleanup so your margin is visible, and never prints below your minimum stop fee. Everything is calculated privately in your browser, free.

How to use it

  1. Enter the mowable lawn area in square feet — subtract the house, driveway, and beds. Bill the grass, not the parcel.
  2. Pick the mowing frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or one-time) and the terrain difficulty.
  3. Choose your regional rate level and set your minimum visit charge (the stop fee floor).
  4. Add edging length and toggle trimming and cleanup.
  5. Read the per-visit range and monthly cost, then open the advanced panel for a cost-up cross-check and a copyable customer quote.

How the numbers are figured

Base mow uses a regional per-sq-ft band (Low $0.012–$0.022, Average $0.018–$0.032, High $0.028–$0.050). That band is multiplied by a frequency factor (weekly 1.00, bi-weekly 1.20, monthly 1.35, one-time 1.45) and a terrain factor (easy 1.00, moderate 1.15, difficult 1.35). Edging is $0.50–$1.00 per linear foot. Trimming is a flat $8/$12/$20 by difficulty and cleanup a flat $5/$8/$12 by difficulty. The subtotal is floored at your minimum stop fee, then each end of the range is rounded to the nearest $5 for a clean quote. Monthly cost uses 4.3 visits/month weekly, 2.15 bi-weekly, 1 monthly.

Worked example

An 8,000 sq ft lawn (≈ 0.18 acre), mowed weekly, moderate terrain, average region, with 150 ft of edging and trimming + cleanup on:

That worked example is a big, edge-heavy lot — a quarter-acre weekly cut with light edging typically lands in the $45–$90 range, matching national data. Adjust area, edging, and region to your job.

Frequently asked questions

How do you price a lawn mowing job?

Price off the mowable turf, not the whole lot: grass area (sq ft) × regional rate ($0.012–$0.05) × frequency factor × terrain factor, then add edging/trimming/cleanup and apply a minimum stop fee.

How much should I charge to mow a lawn per visit?

The 2026 US average is about $123/visit; most quarter-acre jobs run $45–$90. Keep a $40–$50 minimum so small lots still cover drive time and equipment.

Why does bi-weekly cost more per cut than weekly?

Taller grass means more time and cleanup per visit. Bi-weekly customers pay roughly 15–25% more per cut — this tool applies +20% bi-weekly, +35% monthly, +45% one-time.

Should I bill the total lot size or just the lawn?

Bill the grass. Subtract the house, driveway, and beds — mowing scales with the turf you cut, and billing the full parcel is the biggest pricing error in lawn care.

What gross margin should a lawn care business target?

50–55% is the healthy benchmark. The regional bands here already bake that in; use the advanced cost-up cross-check if your loaded crew cost is higher than typical.

Accuracy notes & disclaimers

This is a planning estimate / starting range, not a binding quote. Real price depends on an on-site look at slope, gate access, dog waste, weeds, debris, and grass height — all of which can move the number up; the first cut of a neglected, overgrown lawn often warrants a one-time "reset" surcharge beyond these figures. Rates are 2025–2026 US national figures ($0.01–$0.05/sq ft, $50–$200/acre, ~$123 average per visit, $40–$50 minimum); local labor markets vary roughly 2x, so the regional selector is a coarse proxy, not a substitute for knowing your own costs. The default bands bake in a ~50–55% gross margin — if your loaded crew cost is higher, the band may read low, so use the cost-up cross-check. Edging at $0.50–$1.00/ft and the flat trimming/blow adds are typical bundled-service values; many pros include them free in the base mow, so the calculator separates them to keep margin visible and you can re-bundle when quoting. Per-sq-ft pricing overstates on multi-acre lots (above ~2–5 acres switch to acre tiers or a custom on-site quote). This does not include fertilization, weed control, aeration, leaf removal, or hauling — those are separate services. All figures are pre-tax; sales tax on services varies by state and is the pro's responsibility to add.
