A burger recipe that makes 1 portion:
Total recipe cost ≈ $3.23, so plate cost ≈ $3.23 per portion. At a 30% target: $3.23 ÷ 0.30 = $10.77 suggested price — a 3.33× markup. Gross profit per dish is $10.77 − $3.23 = $7.54 (a 70% gross margin). If you instead "tripled the cost" you'd charge $9.69 — a 33.3% food cost, leaving money on every plate.

Find plate cost (total recipe cost ÷ portions), then divide by your target food-cost % as a decimal. Menu price = plate cost ÷ (target % ÷ 100). $4.50 ÷ 0.30 = $15.00, a 30% food cost and 3.33× markup.

This tool calculates gross profit / contribution margin — menu price minus food cost only. It does not account for labor, rent, utilities, packaging, payment-processing fees, or waste/spoilage beyond the yield input. Net profit is far lower; typical full-service net margins are mid-single-digit percentages.

Results are only as good as the inputs. Supplier prices change and yield varies by product, season, and prep skill, so re-cost recipes when invoice prices move (quarterly at minimum). The suggested price is a starting point, not a verdict — also weigh competitor pricing, perceived value, menu engineering, and price psychology.
