When your waterline tile is falling off, grout-stained, or calcium-crusted, you want a budget for replacing the tile and coping. The catch: it is priced by the linear foot of pool perimeter, not square feet — and the spread between ceramic and glass tile (or concrete and travertine coping) makes online numbers feel useless. Coping is quoted per linear foot of edge. Tile is quoted per square foot of material, but it is only
installed in a thin band along the waterline — so contractors convert your perimeter into square feet:
tile sq ft = perimeter (LF) × band height (ft). A standard 6-inch band is 0.5 sq ft of tile per
linear foot. That hidden conversion is the #1 reason owners panic at "$/sq ft" numbers. This tool shows the

Both are priced by the linear foot of pool perimeter, not square feet. Tile is quoted per square foot of material but installed along the perimeter, so the perimeter (LF) is converted to tile area using a band height (usually 6 in). Coping is priced strictly per linear foot of edge. This tool does the conversion and shows a cost per linear foot.
Installed averages: ~$10/sq ft ceramic/porcelain, ~$22 stone-look porcelain, ~$45 glass mosaic. With a 6-in band, a 90 LF pool needs ~45–50 sq ft, so ceramic tile alone is ~$500 while glass mosaic can top $2,000 before demo, coping, and drain.
Roughly $38–45/LF for concrete and $55–80/LF for travertine or natural stone, installed. On a 90 LF pool that is ~$3,400–4,000 for concrete vs $6,100+ for travertine — the material moves the total more than anything else.
Material grade (ceramic vs glass tile; concrete vs travertine coping) and regional labor. Comparing a ceramic quote to a glass-mosaic number is apples to oranges. Pick an explicit grade and region multiplier and the spread collapses to a defensible range.

No — it is a planning estimate using 2025–2026 US national averages. Substrate condition behind the tile (often only visible after demo), local labor, permits, and access change the real price. Always get 2–3 contractor quotes.
This is a planning/budgeting estimate, not a quote. It assumes a standard chip-out of existing tile/coping in sound condition. Hidden damage (bond-beam cracks, rebar corrosion, hollow/delaminated areas) is only visible after demo and can add materially to the real cost. It excludes permits, structural or plumbing repairs, new skimmer/return faces, and full pool resurfacing — those are separate scopes. The oval and freeform perimeter factors (1.6× / 1.7× of L+W) are approximations; a measured perimeter entered in the override is always more accurate for irregular pools. Drain & refill uses ~$55 per 5,000 gallons and a flat ~$200 pump-out; metered water rates and drought restrictions vary by municipality. Extreme markets (coastal metros, remote areas) can fall outside the ±range — use the region multiplier and treat the high end as more likely in high-cost areas. Always get 2–3 contractor quotes.
