Camping Trip Checklist Generator — guide & how to use

What it does

This free camping checklist generator builds a tailored, categorized packing list from four simple inputs — trip length, season, group size, and car vs. backpacking — plus optional climate and water-source refinements. It computes the numbers that actually matter on the trail: how much water to carry (and how many jugs), total food weight and a calorie target, and how many stove fuel canisters you'll burn. The list groups everything by category, flags the Ten Essentials as your non-negotiable safety core, and is built privately in your browser. Sign in to a free account to download the printable PDF.

How to use it

  1. Enter your trip length in nights (use 0 for a day trip) and your group size.
  2. Pick your camping type — backpacking enforces weight discipline and the Ten Essentials; car camping unlocks comfort and bulk items.
  3. Choose the season, which sets your sleeping-bag temperature target and clothing layers.
  4. Optionally open Refine to set a climate (desert raises water sharply, wet adds rain layers, bugs add a headnet) and your water-source reliability for backpacking.
  5. Tick items as you pack — progress saves in your browser. Use Copy list for a quick paste, or print to PDF from the Share panel.

Accuracy & safety

This tool produces a planning estimate and starting checklist, not a guarantee. Individual needs swing 50%+ with body size, metabolism, pace, fitness, and acclimatization. Water figures are conservative midpoints of published ranges (temperate ~2–3 L/day, desert summer 6–8 L/day, NPS Grand Canyon minimum ~1 gal / 3.8 L/day). Food targets (1.5–2.5 lb / 2,500–4,500 cal per day) are population ranges, not nutrition advice. Choose a sleeping bag rated below the forecast overnight low with a ~10°F margin — manufacturer "limit"/"extreme" ratings are survival, not comfort. Winter and high-altitude trips materially change fuel (snow-melting can double it), insulation (R-value ≥5 pad), and risk; treat the winter output as a floor, not a complete list. The Ten Essentials are non-negotiable — never trim them to save weight. Always verify the forecast, water-source reliability, permit, and food-storage (bear canister) rules with the managing agency before you go.

Sources: REI Expert Advice (car & backpacking checklists, Ten Essentials, ultralight meal planning, winter camping), NPS Ten Essentials, Andrew Skurka food planning, and published hydration baselines (Hilltop Packs, Battlbox, NPS Grand Canyon). Frequently asked questions

How much water should I bring camping?

A common baseline is ~3 L per person per day in temperate weather, ~4 L at altitude, and 5.5+ L in hot desert. The tool multiplies by group and days (nights + 1), adds cooking/cleanup margin for car camping, and converts to 2-gallon jugs. Verify against the real heat and your exertion.

How do I calculate food for a backpacking trip?

Plan 1.5–2.0 lb/person/day backpacking (2,500–4,500 cal) or 2.0–2.5 lb car camping. The tool uses the midpoint × group × days and shows the caloric density (cal/oz) so you can keep it light — aim for ≥100 cal/oz. The extra emergency day rides in the Ten Essentials.

What are the Ten Essentials?

Navigation, headlamp, sun protection, first aid, knife/repair, fire, emergency shelter, extra food, extra water, extra clothes. Per NPS/REI they are non-negotiable on every trip, including day hikes — the tool flags them distinctly.

Does this work for a day trip with no overnight?

Yes. Set trip length to 0 nights. The tool drops the sleep system but keeps the Ten Essentials, one day of food, and water for one day.

How much stove fuel do I need?

Budget ~20 g/person/day for two boil meals; one 230 g canister covers ~11–13 person-days. The tool rounds up to whole canisters. Cold/altitude and melting snow can roughly double it.
