Dog Food Portion Calculator — guide & how to use

What it does

This calculator estimates how much food to feed your dog each day using the same energy formula vets use, then converts daily calories into cups per day and per meal based on the calories in your specific food. Calculated privately in your browser, free.

The formula (vet RER / MER)

  1. RER (resting energy) = 70 × (weight in kg)0.75 kcal/day.
  2. MER (daily need) = RER × a life-stage factor (≈1.6 neutered adult, 1.8 intact, 1.0 weight loss, 2.0 active or older puppy, 3.0 young puppy).
  3. Cups/day = MER ÷ the kcal per cup printed on your food bag.

How to use it

  1. Enter your dog's weight (lb or kg).
  2. Pick the life stage / activity that fits.
  3. Enter the kcal per cup from your bag (or leave the 360 default).
  4. Choose meals per day — the cups split across them.
