Budgeting estimate only — not a guaranteed bill. Real costs vary with cold weather (which can cut efficiency 20–40%), driving style, HVAC use, terrain, and highway vs city mix. This tool models home (Level 2) AC charging at a single blended rate — it doesn't cover DC fast or public charging, time-of-use spikes, solar self-generation, or net-metering credits. The gas comparison is fuel/energy only and excludes maintenance, insurance, depreciation, and charger install. All math runs in your browser — nothing is sent anywhere.

What it does

This calculator turns your electricity rate, EV efficiency, and miles driven into a real dollar figure: your monthly home-charging cost (with annual in the subtext), your cost per mile, your cost per charge, and — if you fill in the gas fields — your savings vs gasoline. It corrects for charging losses so you're billed for the energy you actually pull from the wall, not just what reaches the battery.

How to use it

  1. Enter your all-in $/kWh rate (total bill ÷ total kWh) and your car's mi/kWh from the trip computer.
  2. Set your monthly miles and charging efficiency (default 88%).
  3. Add battery size and a typical charge % for the per-charge number, and optionally gas price + MPG to see savings vs gas.

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home per month?

For a typical setup ($0.18/kWh, 3.5 mi/kWh, ~88% efficiency, ~1,125 mi/month) home charging runs roughly $65/month, or about $789/year. Your rate matters most — $0.30/kWh nearly doubles it, while off-peak EV rates near $0.10/kWh cut it sharply. Enter your own numbers for a personal figure.

What is charging efficiency and why does it matter?

It's the share of wall energy that reaches the battery. Level 2 home charging loses ~6–15% (so ~85–94% efficient). Because mi/kWh is measured at the battery but you pay at the wall, leaving it out under-estimates cost by ~10–15%. Default here is 88%.

How do I convert kWh/100mi or Wh/mi to mi/kWh?

They're inverses. mi/kWh = 100 ÷ (kWh per 100 mi), so 28 kWh/100mi = 3.6 mi/kWh. For Wh/mi: mi/kWh = 1000 ÷ (Wh per mi), so 250 Wh/mi = 4.0 mi/kWh. Most mainstream EVs are 2.5–4.5 mi/kWh.

Which electricity rate should I enter?

Your all-in delivered rate: total bill ÷ total kWh (supply + delivery + taxes). The advertised supply rate alone is often half the real number. Charge overnight on a TOU/EV plan? Enter that lower rate instead.

Does this include DC fast charging or public charging?

No. It models home (Level 2 / Level 1) AC charging at your entered rate. DC fast and public stations are priced much higher per kWh or per minute and are out of scope. It assumes 100% home charging.

How accurate is the savings-vs-gas figure?

It compares fuel/energy cost only — your electricity vs the same miles in a gas car. It excludes maintenance, insurance, depreciation, and charger install, so it isn't full cost of ownership. It's an estimate for budgeting.
