This calculator answers the two questions every student has before finals. In "What grade do I need?" mode it solves for the exact score you need on your final exam (or remaining work) to land your target overall grade. In "What's my current grade?" mode it computes your current weighted grade across categories with different weights — homework, quizzes, midterm, final, and so on. Both modes show a letter grade on the scale you choose, and the required-score mode includes a live what-if slider and a table of required scores for every letter target. Everything runs privately in your browser, free.
Required final score (Mode A): required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal (30% → 0.30). Current weighted grade (Mode B): grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight) — dividing by the actual sum of the weights you enter, so a mid-semester grade is correct even when the weights don't yet total 100%.
You currently have an 85%, you want a 90% overall, and the final is worth 40% of the course (w = 0.40):
85 × (1 − 0.40) = 85 × 0.60 = 51.90 − 51 = 39.39 ÷ 0.40 = 97.5%.So you need a 97.5% on the final to finish with a 90%. (The tool rounds the required score up to the nearest 0.1 so the number it shows is never below the true requirement.)
Homework 90% worth 20% and Exams 85% worth 80%:
(90 × 20 + 85 × 80) ÷ (20 + 80) = (1800 + 6800) ÷ 100 = 8600 ÷ 100 = 86.0% — a B on a standard scale.

Use required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. The "What grade do I need?" mode does this and rounds up so the shown number is never below the true requirement.
Your overall weighted standing on everything graded so far, excluding the final or remaining work whose weight you enter separately. It is not a single category's average, and it should not already bake in a placeholder for the final.
Multiply each category's score by its weight, sum them, and divide by the total of the weights you entered: grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight). Example: Homework 90% @ 20% and Exams 85% @ 80% → (90×20 + 85×80) ÷ 100 = 86.0%. The "What's my current grade?" mode builds this from your category rows.
A required score above 100% means the target isn't reachable on the final alone — impossible without extra credit, not just hard. The tool flags it and shows your best-possible overall grade if you scored a perfect 100% on the final.
Yes. Pick a Standard 10-point scale (A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60) or a Plus/Minus scale (A+ 97, A 93, A- 90, B+ 87 …). The rounding toggle decides whether an 89.6% becomes a 90 (A-) or stays a B+ before lettering. Cutoffs and rounding vary by school — always confirm against your syllabus.
