Gift Certificate Generator — how to use it

What it does

This free gift certificate generator builds a clean, branded, printable certificate right in your browser — perfect for salons, spas, restaurants, gyms, photographers, and boutiques who want to sell or hand out gift certificates without a designer or a paid design subscription. Add your business name and logo, choose a dollar amount or a named service, set the expiry, and the tool generates a unique redemption code and a scannable barcode, lays out a professional certificate, and runs a built-in expiry-law check. Need a holiday stack? Set a quantity and it produces a batch — each certificate with its own code — plus a CSV ledger for your register.

How to use it

  1. Enter your business name (required) and optionally upload a logo and pick an accent color to match your brand.
  2. Choose the certificate type: Purchased (a customer paid for it) or Promotional (given away free). This drives the legal expiry rules.
  3. Pick a value type — a fixed dollar amount (e.g. $50.00) or a named service (e.g. "60-minute massage").
  4. Set the issue date, your state, and an expiry mode. The compliance banner turns green, amber, or red as you change them.
  5. Set a quantity and a code format, write your terms, choose a print size, then Print, Download PNG, or for a batch Download all as PDF and the Redemption CSV.

Worked example

A spa wants to sell $75 holiday gift certificates. They set Certificate type = Purchased, Amount = 75.00, Issue date = Dec 9, 2026, and try Expiry mode = Term, 12 months. The tool turns the banner red: a purchased certificate can't legally expire before Dec 9, 2031 (the federal 5-year floor). They switch to No expiry — the safest choice and legally required for sold certificates in CA and CT — and the banner goes green. They set Quantity = 50, download the PDF stack, and save the CSV so the front desk can mark each unique code as it is redeemed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a gift certificate for free?

Enter your business name, choose a dollar amount or a service, set the expiry, and add your terms. The tool generates a unique code and a printable, branded certificate live in your browser. Click Print or Download PNG; for multiple certificates, set a quantity and download the batch as a PDF or CSV. It's free (a free account unlocks download & save).

How long can a gift certificate be valid before it expires?

Under the federal CARD Act, a certificate a customer paid for generally can't expire for at least five years from purchase or the last load. California and Connecticut generally prohibit expiration on sold certificates, and Massachusetts requires at least seven years. Free promotional certificates can expire sooner but must be labeled promotional. The tool flags a too-short expiry, but it's not legal advice.

What's the difference between a purchased and a promotional certificate?

A purchased certificate is one a customer paid money for — covered by the CARD Act 5-year minimum and fee limits. A promotional certificate is given away free via an award, loyalty, or promotional program; it's exempt from the floor but must disclose on its face that it's for promotional purposes and show its expiration date.

Is the code on each certificate unique?

Yes. Each certificate gets its own code from an unambiguous alphabet that omits 0/O and 1/I/L so staff don't mistype it. Codes are guaranteed distinct within the batch you generate. Because there's no server, the tool can't guarantee global uniqueness or know if a code was redeemed — keep the CSV as your ledger.

Is my logo or data uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Your logo is read locally with FileReader and drawn to the certificate; nothing you enter is uploaded, logged, or stored.

Can I print these on gift certificate cardstock?

Yes — pick a print size that matches your stock (8.5x3.5 in, 5.5x4.25 in, or a full sheet). The design keeps a safe margin and a border. Print one test certificate and check the cut before a full batch.
