What it does

This estimator gives you a defensible ballpark cost to build a paver patio before you call contractors — so you can budget, compare bids, and order the right amount of material. It builds the number up from your patio area and chosen paver material (the dominant cost drivers), then layers in excavation and a compacted gravel base, bedding sand, edge restraints, polymeric joint sand, labor, site-access difficulty, a regional index, and optional demolition. It also tells you how many pavers to buy (with a waste allowance) and a materials-only DIY figure. The output is always a low–high installed-cost range — never a single firm number. Everything is calculated privately in your browser, free.

How to use it

  1. Enter the patio’s length and width, or type a total area to override (for L-shaped or curved patios).
  2. Pick the paver material — concrete is cheapest, porcelain and natural stone the most expensive.
  3. Pick your paver size so the tool can count how many pavers you need.
  4. Set site access and the region index, and tick demolition if an old slab, patio, or deck must come out first.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 15 ft (300 sq ft) concrete-paver patio, 6 in × 9 in pavers, moderate access, region 1.0, no demolition:

  1. Area = 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft.
  2. Pavers = 300 ÷ 0.375 ft² = 800, × 1.10 waste = 880 pavers.
  3. Material + labor = 300 × ($12–$22/ft²) × 1.00 access × 1.0 region = $3,600–$6,600.
  4. Base, sand & edging = 300 × $5/ft² = $1,500 (gravel base, bedding + polymeric sand, edge restraints).
  5. Demolition = $0 (none ticked).
  6. Total = $5,100–$8,100, rounded to the nearest $100 = $5,100–$8,100; midpoint ~$6,600.
  7. Per square foot = ~$17–$27/ft² installed. DIY materials only ≈ $1,900–$2,200.

So you’d budget roughly $5,100–$8,100 installed, and a $6,000 quote would land within range — fair. Switch the material to natural stone and the same patio jumps to roughly $7,500–$15,000 — which is exactly why comparing bids on the same material matters.

Material rate ($/ft² installed): concrete paver 12–22, clay brick 14–26, natural stone 20–45, porcelain 22–48. Access multiplier: easy 0.92, moderate 1.00, hard 1.20.
