What it does

How to use it

  1. Enter the wall's length (linear feet along the base) and exposed height (the visible part retaining soil).

Worked example

A 40 ft long, 3 ft exposed interlocking-block wall, 6 in buried base, moderate access, region 1.0, no surcharge:

  1. Face area = 40 × 3 = 120 sq ft. Total height = 3 + 6/12 = 3.5 ft → under 4 ft, no permit/engineer.
  2. Wall (material + labor) = 120 × ($18–$35) × 1.00 access × 1.0 region = $2,160–$4,200.
  3. Sitework & drainage = $800 + (40 × $18) = $1,520 (perforated pipe, gravel, base prep).
  4. Geogrid / permit / engineering = $0 (total height under 4 ft, no surcharge).
  5. Total = $3,680–$5,720, rounded to the nearest $100 = $3,700–$5,700; midpoint ~$4,700.
  6. Per linear foot = ~$93–$143/ft. Verdict: DIY-eligible (under 4 ft, no permit typically required).

So you'd budget roughly $3,700–$5,700, and a $4,000 quote would land within range — fair. Bump the exposed height to 3.5 ft, though, and the 6 in auto-base pushes total height to exactly 4 ft — right at the permit line: permit, engineering, and geogrid switch on and the picture changes entirely.
