What it does

This estimator gives you a defensible ballpark cost to install an in-ground sprinkler system before you call contractors — so you can budget, compare bids, and understand what you’re paying for. It works from your lawn area (which it converts to zones, the real cost driver) or a known zone count, then builds the number up from per-zone cost (valve, pipe, heads, wiring, trenching, labor) plus the controller, a code-required backflow preventer, soil/trenching difficulty, a regional index, and optional smart-controller and drip upgrades. The output is always a low–high installed-cost range — never a single firm number — with the per-zone figure shown. Everything is calculated privately in your browser, free.

How to use it

  1. Enter your lawn / irrigated area in square feet, or a known zone count to override the estimate.
  2. Set soil / trenching difficulty — rocky soil, roots, or trenching under hardscape raises labor.
  3. Set the region index for your local labor market.
  4. Tick smart controller for a WiFi/weather-based timer, and drip zone if you want garden beds on their own circuit.
  5. Read the installed range, the $/zone figure, and the controller/backflow line items.
  6. Optionally paste a contractor quote to see whether it’s below, within, or above the estimated range.

Worked example

A 6,000 sq ft lawn, moderate soil, region 1.0, basic controller, no drip:

  1. Zones = ceil(6,000 ÷ 1,500) = 4 zones.
  2. Per-zone (valve, pipe, heads, wiring, trenching, labor) = $650–$1,150 × 1.00 soil × 1.0 region. For 4 zones = $2,600–$4,600.
  3. Controller (basic timer) = $150; backflow preventer = $250.
  4. Smart upgrade = $0; drip zone = $0 (neither ticked).
  5. Total = $3,000–$5,000, rounded to the nearest $100 = $3,000–$5,000; midpoint ~$4,000.
  6. Per zone = ~$750–$1,250/zone installed.

So you’d budget roughly $3,000–$5,000, and a $4,000 quote would land within range — fair. Tick the smart controller and add a drip zone and the picture shifts up by roughly $1,000 — but the smart controller can pay for itself in water savings within a season or two.
