Take-home pay per paycheck — 2026 federal, FICA & state.
This calculator turns your gross wages into estimated net take-home pay for each paycheck and for the year. It itemizes federal income tax withholding (IRS Publication 15-T, 2026 Worksheet 1A percentage method), Social Security (6.2% up to the $184,500 wage base), Medicare (1.45% plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax over $200,000), state income tax, and each pre-tax and post-tax deduction. Everything is calculated privately in your browser — free.
This is the single biggest source of paycheck-math errors. A traditional 401(k) contribution lowers your income-tax wages but not your Social Security and Medicare wages — you still pay 7.65% FICA on it. A Section 125 cafeteria-plan deduction (most health insurance premiums, HSA, FSA) lowers both your income-tax wages and your FICA wages. This tool keeps the two bases separate so the FICA line is correct.
The effective withholding rate shown is total taxes withheld (federal + state + Social Security + Medicare) divided by gross — a blended average. Your marginal rate is the bracket your next dollar lands in. Withholding is an estimate of your year-end liability, not the final number; your tax return reconciles the difference.

Start with gross pay, subtract pre-tax deductions (401k, health insurance), then subtract federal income tax withholding, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), and state income tax, then subtract any post-tax deductions. What's left is your net take-home pay.
Federal income tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare (7.65% combined), state income tax, and your benefit deductions all come out before you're paid. On a typical salary that's roughly 20 to 30 percent of gross.
It's an estimate of what gets withheld each paycheck using IRS Publication 15-T 2026 methods. Your final tax for the year is reconciled on your tax return, where credits, other income, and itemized deductions can change the result.
