What it does

The Snow Day Calculator turns a coming storm into a single probability that school will be cancelled tomorrow. It weighs the strongest predictors — snowfall vs. your region's closure threshold, a separate (and aggressive) ice score, the temperature that keeps roads frozen, the storm timing relative to the 5–9am bus window, your district's tendency to close, and any active NWS Winter Storm alert. It also runs an independent dangerous-cold path off the wind chill, because severe cold alone can close school with no snow at all.

Worked example

You're in a Midwest urban district (closes around 7 inches). The forecast: 6 in of snow, 0 in ice, low temp 18°F, wind chill 20°F, storm hitting the 5–9am bus window, average district tendency, with a Winter Storm Warning:

Drop the warning and the snowfall to 4 in and the odds fall into "coin flip" territory — and the tool will note a real chance of a 2-hour delay instead of a full closure.

How to use it

  2. Add the storm's lowest temperature and lowest wind chill — they drive different paths, so don't enter the same number in both.
  3. Pick the storm timing, your region, your district's tendency to close, and any active NWS alert.

How the math works

Each factor becomes a 0–100 sub-score. The snow sub-score is a smooth S-curve against your region's threshold T: S = 100 × (1 − e^(−1.6 × snow/T)), so it hits ~80 right around the threshold and saturates above it. Ice is ice ÷ 0.25 × 100 (a quarter inch = 100). The two combine as max(snow, ice) + 0.25 × min(snow, ice) — the dominant hazard leads, the secondary adds a bump. Then the snow hazard is multiplied by temperature (×1.10 when ≤20°F, down to ×0.65 above 36°F where snow turns to rain), timing (×1.15 bus window down to ×0.70 evening), and your district tendency (×0.80–×1.20). A separate cold path scores the wind chill on a gradient toward 95 near −35°F. The final number is max(snow path, cold path) + alert bonus, capped at 99% so it's never a guarantee.

Can school be cancelled because of cold instead of snow?

Yes. Dangerous cold is its own closure path. NWS suggests cancelling around a sustained −35°F wind chill, but many districts close at −20°F to −30°F. The tool uses a gradient and tells you when the result is "driven by dangerous cold."

Does ice matter more than snow?

Often. Ice closes schools at far smaller amounts than snow because untreated freezing rain makes bus routes impassable. Here just 0.25 in of ice maxes out the ice sub-score, so enter ice separately and don't skip it.

Why does storm timing change the odds?

Storms hitting the 5–9am bus window most often force a full closure. A storm ending before dawn gives crews time to clear roads (lower odds), and a daytime storm more often means an early dismissal than a cancellation.

Why does it never show 100%?

Weather and the administrators who make the call are both unpredictable, and most closure decisions hinge on conditions the tool can't see. The result is capped at 99% so it reads as strong odds, never a guarantee.
